Air, Nitrox and other Gasses

You can feel confident with your Octopus Gardens fills. We use multiple layers of redundent filtration and moisture separtion. Because we also test air other facilities, we have air testing equipment onsite and test our equipment and air more often than most other shops. We fill your tank to be full when cool! We will always show you the pressure gauge so you can confirm your fill before leaving the shop.

We bank 32% and 40% nitrox so we can fill to your desired specifactions. We also offer Argon and Helium (call ahead for these gasses).

What about top-ups?

We are sorry that the short answer has to be that we cannot offer free top-ups. We understand why you may wonder, "If I only need a few hundred pounds of air/nitrox can I have it for free?” Our graduated pricing model may add to the confusion. It may seem logical to assume that it is significantly cheaper for us to fill a smaller tank. But it is not. Here is a bit of background that may help you understand why.

A secret that most divers do not realize that dive shops do not make any profit selling air fills. Dive shops provide this necessary service in hopes that you will remember them kindly when you want to purchase dive gear (and not buy it online). If you add up the cost of compressors, storage tanks, fittings, gauges, filters, oil, oxygen, maintenance, training, gas testing, and staff time, you would easily see that there is no profit; it is all service. The amount we charge for fills helps offset cost of providing this service. Your fill charge is your contribution to helping us give you good quality fills. Even if we only top-up your tank with a few hundred pounds it still cost staff time and wear and tear on the equipment. In fact the last few hundred pounds on a high pressure scuba tank are disproportionally hard on the equipment.

Additionally, a significant number of customers around our area use scuba tanks to do shallow dives to fix boats, for paint ball or other purposes. Other shops have seen that those customers tend to abuse a free top-off offer and may never pay for fills.

We hope this explanation helps you understand more about how your fill fees help us provide you with the best service possible.
